Kikkerland, Pop Up Shop

Monday 4th Nov 2013, 12:00

In the center of the Netherlands lies the dynamic and creative city Utrecht, home of some exiting stores. One of their latest: the Kikkerland pop up shop.

Kikkerland was founded in 1992 by Jan van der Lande and Kazumi Hamaya in New York. The main business idea was to import and distribute Dutch design, hence the nickname of their Dutch roots: ‘Kikkerland’ (literally: ‘frog land’).

Strangely enough, despite of the fact that Kikkerland has a huge Dutch flavor, last thursday was the opening of their first (pop up) shop in the Netherlands.
We were invited to check out the goods, and we loved them.

These are just some of the creative, most utilirian gadgets of Kikkerland Design. And seeing all this goodness on display in the ancient room of Strand West – filled with ornaments – one of the first things that will pop up in your mind is ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’. ‘I want it now’ will be the second.

Thank our lucky stars Kikkerland grew out to be a global organization, harvesting talented artists all over the world. With their project “Mexico Design Challenge” for instance, they challenged Mexican students to create products with the Kikkerland concept and a Mexican cultural references. Five talented designers were selected, and the rest is history.

The next country in line is South Korea. We’ve seen amazing designs come from Seoul, so it’s guaranteed to be an instant classic. Intrigued yet? Go to the Kikkerland website to get inspired – and buy your favorite gadget while you’re at it.

If you’re living in the Netherlands just head over to the pop up shop in Utrecht. Be quick though, it’s only there during November and December – yep, perfect timing for your holiday shoppings.
